4/19 - Earth Day Book Swap!

Earth Day Book Swap!

BK Swappers

Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (EDT)

Join us at the first-ever book swap at the Earth Day New York events in Union Square!  This spring’s Earth Day New York events will include a sharing/collaborative economy exhibition that will allow the public to learn more about the opportunities presented by the sharing/collaborative economy.
As part of that exhibition, Earth Day New York, BK Swappers, and other organizations are putting together a book swap, giving people an opportunity to share with others books that were important to them, talk to other people who are passionate about the sharing/collaborative economy, and kick off Earth Week outside!
The book swap will take place in Union Square in the alcove along Union Square West, just north of E. 15th Street.

How does the swap work?
For each book you bring, you get to take one from the swap area. We will give you one ticket for each book that we accept for the swap. Each ticket can be used to take any other book from the swap area! Come early to drop off your books, hang out to see what shows up, and stay to chat with fellow swappers.
What can I bring to swap?
Books must be in good condition and must be used. One of the key ideas behind the swap is to emphasize the sustainability aspect of the sharing/collaborative economy as it allows us to share and conserve resources.  Bring books that made an impact on you. If you love to cook, bring one of your favorite cookbooks that you think someone else would enjoy! If you loved Catcher in the Rye in school, bring your old copy to share with a new reader.
How many books can I bring to swap?
Each person can bring up to five (5) books to swap. Books left at the end of the swap will be donated to Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.
What if it rains on the day of the event?
Unfortunately, if it is raining during the scheduled time of the swap we will have to cancel, as we’ll be in an outdoor and uncovered space.
Registration is free and open to everyone.
You do not have to register to bring a book to swap, but we'd love a general headcount.

Thanks for participating!  See you in Union Square!
About the organizers

VOLUNTEERS WANTED: We're looking for a few volunteers to help us at the Earth Day Book Swap, taking place in Union Square on April 19! Shifts are about 2 hours long — think of the books, the cool people, the fun! Email us at bkswappers@gmail.com if you're willing to donate your time and good works. Thanks!

Happy Book Swappin',
Terresa =)

Repost from nypl.org:

New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center, Shelby Cullom Davis Museum, Donald and Mary Oenslager Gallery
Come play and discover things you never knew about everyone’s favorite street—Sesame Street. Sesame Street transformed television by proving it was possible to produce a show that was both educational and entertaining for children. A collaboration of Sesame Workshop and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this exhibition gives fans of all ages the opportunity to experience what it’s like to create an episode of the show and get close to their fuzzy and furry friends from the street. For more than four decades Sesame Street has been helping kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder with the help of beloved Muppets like Elmo and Grover and its signature blend of animation, music, and humor. Sesame Street teaches not just ABCs and 123s, but life lessons ranging from health and nutrition to cooperation, friendship, and diversity. The children’s program is celebrating 45 years on television with this interactive behind the scenes look at the show.
Learn how show segments start with an educational foundation and the process from page to screen. Scripts, storyboards, lead sheets, designs, and scores from the archives of Sesame Workshop and the Library for the Performing Arts illustrate how Sesame Street enhances early childhood education with the highest of production values. See behind the scenes footage, animation cels, photographs, blueprints, and an architectural model of the set from the early 90’s. Get up close with Elmo, Oscar, Grover, and other favorite characters. Watch show highlights, a retrospective of many of the celebrities and notable people that have visited Sesame Street, and special appearances over the years. Check out Sesame Street products from record albums, to toys and clothing. View Sesame Street book art and original art from a Sesame Street newspaper comic. Learn about Sesame Street international programs and view Muppets from other countries. Snuffy and Super Grover welcome visitors to a child-friendly area for reading Sesame Street books, creating art projects and playing with Sesame Street games, apps, and e-books.
