REPOST: 6/14: Take a Photo with a Shirtless FDNY Firefighter!

Thirteen of New York City's bravest pose for

REPOST FROM AMNY:

Meet an FDNY calendar star at charity event

New Yorkers who want their photo taken with a hunky, topless firefighter (and who doesn't?) can stop by Times Square this weekend to celebrate the FDNY's 150th anniversary.
If you don't faint from that photo, visitors can then buy limited edition merchandise, including a T-shirt and collectible pin, to benefit The FDNY Foundation and take a -- slightly tamer -- photo with the commemorative anniversary truck on Sunday, which is parked outside the Hard Rock Cafe, also celebrating it's founders day.
"Hard Rock looks forward to celebrating Founder's Day this year by honoring those who serve our community, and it's a privilege to support the lifesaving work of the FDNY through Hard Rock Cafe New York's limited-edition merchandise," said John Pasquale, director of sales and marketing for Hard Rock Cafe New York. "Like Hard Rock, The Fire Department is a renowned New York staple and we are proud to join efforts as we celebrate our anniversaries, and recognize FDNY members for their dedication to our city."
The FDNY Foundation educates the city on fire safety awareness, supports training for its members, and backs enhanced technology.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro and first responders will also share stories of their work in the field.
The event begins at 10 a.m. in the cafe's Times Square location on Broadway, between 43rd and 44th Street.
Later this summer Hard Rock Cafe will host a burger cook off with firefighters, with the winning recipe offered on their menu from September for a limited time.

4/19 - Earth Day Book Swap!

Earth Day Book Swap!

BK Swappers

Sunday, April 19, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM (EDT)

Join us at the first-ever book swap at the Earth Day New York events in Union Square!  This spring’s Earth Day New York events will include a sharing/collaborative economy exhibition that will allow the public to learn more about the opportunities presented by the sharing/collaborative economy.
As part of that exhibition, Earth Day New York, BK Swappers, and other organizations are putting together a book swap, giving people an opportunity to share with others books that were important to them, talk to other people who are passionate about the sharing/collaborative economy, and kick off Earth Week outside!
The book swap will take place in Union Square in the alcove along Union Square West, just north of E. 15th Street.

How does the swap work?
For each book you bring, you get to take one from the swap area. We will give you one ticket for each book that we accept for the swap. Each ticket can be used to take any other book from the swap area! Come early to drop off your books, hang out to see what shows up, and stay to chat with fellow swappers.
What can I bring to swap?
Books must be in good condition and must be used. One of the key ideas behind the swap is to emphasize the sustainability aspect of the sharing/collaborative economy as it allows us to share and conserve resources.  Bring books that made an impact on you. If you love to cook, bring one of your favorite cookbooks that you think someone else would enjoy! If you loved Catcher in the Rye in school, bring your old copy to share with a new reader.
How many books can I bring to swap?
Each person can bring up to five (5) books to swap. Books left at the end of the swap will be donated to Housing Works Bookstore Cafe.
What if it rains on the day of the event?
Unfortunately, if it is raining during the scheduled time of the swap we will have to cancel, as we’ll be in an outdoor and uncovered space.
Registration is free and open to everyone.
You do not have to register to bring a book to swap, but we'd love a general headcount.

Thanks for participating!  See you in Union Square!
About the organizers
Earth Day New York is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that puts together large-scale Earth Day events every spring and runs a series of environmental education programs throughout the year, including our school gardens program and sustainable food toolkit project.  Check us out on FacebookTwitter, and earthdayny.org
BK Swappers is a Brooklyn-based larder swap and social gathering. If you bake, can/preserve, grow or forage food and would like to trade the fruits of your labor for other delectable, homemade foods then BK Swappers is for you!
VOLUNTEERS WANTED: We're looking for a few volunteers to help us at the Earth Day Book Swap, taking place in Union Square on April 19! Shifts are about 2 hours long — think of the books, the cool people, the fun! Email us at bkswappers@gmail.com if you're willing to donate your time and good works. Thanks!

Happy Book Swappin',
Terresa =)
