Hard to believe that just 25 years ago you could still smoke on an airplane. Imagine getting stuck next to a nervous chain smoker on your flight home for the holidays in today’s world.
But there are new pitfalls of holiday travel. Like wifi deserts. Yes, we speak of your uncle’s house, that bastion of New Year’s day football, odd poultry smells, and AOL dial-up services.
So why not carry your own?
Wakefield has partnered with Karma, 2012 TechStars grads and makers of the sleek pay-as-go hotspot to set you up for a whole year* of browsing whenever, wherever. Karma’s device offers another compelling catch – you get more data as others use your network.
And because you’ll need a new tablet to connect to your handy little hotspot, we’re tossing in an iPad Mini. (Sorry iPad Air: we’re still sold on the portability of the little guy.)
Enter here to win.
And stay safe out there, folks.
*The winner will receive 10GB of data. This should last around 12 months with normal use.
Now go forth (and skip the poultry).
Nitty Gritty:
3: Members of the same family arrested for smoking on a Canadian flight early this year
1988: Year FAA passed smoking bans on most US flights
2,500,000Approximate number of current AOL dial-up subscribers in the US

SAVE 51% OFF THE PRICE OF A TICKET TO UNCUBED!

A lot has changed since May 17th, 2013.
Edward Snowden went from mild-mannered NSA employee to international man of mystery. The Red Sox went from a last place team to World Series contender. Miley Cyrus appears to have lost her mind.
May 17 was also the last time New York got Uncubed. And in those six months, a lot has changed for us, too.
We’ve subjected the masses in Berlin and Boston to our traveling circus, established the Skill Track as part of the offerings, and lassoed a whole new round of colorful speakers.
Uncubed invades New York’s Metropolitan Pavilion on November 14. The classes kick the whole thing off; soak in the wisdom on ad sales and partnerships from Vice Media, on design from Etsy, and on dev topics from Spotify.
Then at 2pm, the games begin, with reps from more than 65 of New York’s hottest startups all looking to hire. To name a few: Stack Exchange, Tumblr, SoundCloud, Spotify, Booker, Simulmedia, Bounce Exchange, Shutterstock, TheLadders, Meetup, Fog Creek, REDI Technologies and 50onRed. (These fine companies will be fed by Cater2.me and IDA Ireland.)
Of course, if you’ve been to Uncubed before you’ll be expecting more. And it’s more you’ll get, including a massive lineup of discussions (including Lauren Leto from RapGenius and Texts From Last Night, Jon Oringer, the CEO of Shutterstock, and Patrick Moberg, the creator of Dots) made comfortable by Turnstone, the UKTI, and Party Headphones.
You’ll also find the American Airlines Paper Napkin Pitch, the art, Grady’s Cold Brew and the happy hour, brought to you by Tumblr and the NYC EDC.
You can get more information and buy tickets to Uncubed here. Use the coupon code WAKE51 when you check out, and you’ll save 51% off the ticket price. But act fast! This deal’s only good for the next twelve hours.
Now go forth (and ch- ch- ch- change).
Nitty Gritty:
181: # of days between our Spring ’13 NY Uncubed and our Fall ’13 event
181: Atomic number of an element temporarily called Unoctunium
181: A strobogrammatic prime (it looks the same when viewed upside down)
