The only thing better than ice cream is getting it free.
And you can do that this weekend as scoop shops around the city and country hand out treats on the house for National Ice Cream Day this Sunday. Sweet deal!
The unofficial annual holiday lands on the third Sunday of July — the perfect time of year for a cold snack. At some eateries, you’ll be required to download an app but others let you merely show up.
Here are eight places to score free ice cream.
1. McDonald’s
Patrons of the Golden Arches chain can get a free vanilla soft-serve all day long on Sunday, anywhere in the country (mcdonalds.com). This year, all you have to do is download the McDonald’s app to redeem your freebie.
2. Dippin’ Dots
These bite-sized frozen treats will be available in a miniature cup at participating Dippin’ Dots stores — those are actually a thing — throughout the U.S. (dippindots.com)
3. OddFellows Ice Cream Co.
OddFellows is handing out only 25 free soft-serve cones at its carnival-themed pop-up in NoLita on Sunday. Doors open at noon but you might want to get to this 62 Spring St. location early to snag one, especially since toppings include caramel popcorn and cotton candy. (oddfellowsnyc.com)
4. PetSmart
Yes, PetSmart will be handing out free sundaes to pups and their owners at participating PetSmart PetsHotel locations, like at 623 Broadway, all day long on the holiday.
5. 16 Handles
Famous for their fro-yo, 16 Handles will give you a 4-ounce ice cream sample if you download their app and show it to a cashier. Choose from vanilla, Dutch chocolate or limited-edition strawberry shortcake. (16handles.com)
6. Creamline
At the burger spot’s 180 Seventh Ave. location in Chelsea, free mini-cones of locally sourced vanilla and chocolate ice cream will be handed out every Saturday and Sunday of July to honor the holiday.
7. Magnum Ice Cream
Stop by Magnum’s pop-up in the Meatpacking District (875 Washington St.) on Sunday, check in on social media using the hashtag “MagnumNYC,” and indulge in two customizable ice cream bars.
8. Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream
In collaboration with real estate listing site StreetEasy, Morgenstern’s created “Brownstone Crunch,” a salted chocolate pretzel ice cream flavor available for (kinda) free all weekend long at its Lower East Side parlor at 2 Rivington St.
You’ll get a scoop if you donate at least $1 — which StreetEasy will match — to Women In Need, a nonprofit that provides shelter for homeless families in the city.
Happy National Ice Cream Day!
Which free ice cream offer will you be running to first?
