Culture is to NYC as sunshine is to SoCal. But our endless access to art means that we can never hit ’em all, and occasionally, we have to bypass an exhibit or two.
This is not a show to skip.
“A Subtlety
” opens tomorrow in the abandoned Domino Sugar factory, and it’s your one and only opportunity to see inside the landmark before it’s demolished. It’s also your rare chance to look up at a five-story sphinx.
New York artist Kara Walker
, known for her envelope-pushing approach, was tapped to create a large-scale installation within the decrepit, molasses-covered walls. She decided to honor the history of laborers--from the cane fields to the factories to the kitchens. Hence, the 75-foot-long sculpture of an African woman covered in snow-white sugar.
Like any buzz-heavy show (read: the Rain Room
and Infinity Room
), we’re sure the lines will be long and the Instagrams will be aplenty. So strap on some sneaks, take a good book and remember that this is the very reason you live in NYC.
